HAWKE HAD BEEN LUCKY. He’d known that his interfering would cause all kinds of trouble, things he'd have to pay for later. But at the end of the day, it had been worth it. The Unit was disbanded, each of them sent back to their people to help with the disaster that was the Defiant Ones. They were hell-bent on making people pay for their exile. Good luck with that shit. Hawke didn’t have family in the sense that everyone else had. He’d been taken in, and that was all good. But his mother and father where nowhere to be found. He’d straddled both of his worlds for so long, that at the end of the day, his bag of fucks had long since been emptied.

His father didn’t acknowledge him, and his mother thought him a traitor. He’d been taken in by the Shadows. Immortal Yawata of the Minamoto clan had taken him in and trained him as one of their own. Hawke’s brothers and sisters knew his true origins, but never once did they judge him for it.

His father was a wind dragon, descended from Fujin. His mother, well, she was Amaterasu, ancestors of the Imperial Household, and ruler of the Immortal Heavens. Better known as a Celestial. Which made Hawke somewhat of a big deal.

“When is he going to wake up?” Belinda asked, placing her palm on Ronin’s forehead.

“He will. Allow my healer to tend to his wounds.” Hawke tried to lead Belinda away so that the healer could do his job, but she didn’t want to leave the Feral’s side.

“Where are we?” she asked moments later, looking around. “This is not the Underworld.”

It was. But it was Hawke’s people’s version. Here, Hawke had a place among like-minded people.

“This is but a pocket of the Underworld. We are in Izanami’s House of Shadow Warriors. Here, the Immortal God of War rules.”

Looking around frantically with wide eyes, Belinda grabbed Hawke’s shoulders. “We need to leave. Time is wasting.”

Hawke released a long breath before speaking. “We need to wait for Ronin.”

“But Royce’s time is short.”

Hawke didn’t know how to tell Belinda that time was already gone. Royce’s body had already perished. Only his soul remained. The Shadow Warriors were spies and could go anywhere they wanted. Didn’t matter which realm, and when Hawke had received the news about Royce’s body, he had no choice but to come and help his friends. Royce would need a new vessel. Hawke would generally work up to a conversation of this magnitude, but he didn’t have the luxury of time.

“Belinda, you need to calm down and listen to what I have to say.”

Her face scrunched, and she worried her bottom lip before sitting in one of the chairs he had moved into the room.

“What is it, Hawke?”

“There’s no easy way to say this, so I’m gonna just say it. We’re here to help with Royce.”

Her shoulders perked at his words.

“That makes this better with you and your guys here.”

He shook his head. “Yes, but there is more.
